Baroque Art Hannah Brooks  The Ecstasy of St. Teresa : Scultpure by Gian Lorenzo Bernini Introduction      This week I chose to examine the sculpture " The Ecstasy of St. Teresa" by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. This sculpture was created in 1647 and was finished in 1652 in Rome. This sculpture truly embodies the values that were focused on during the Baroque era. This era of art was categorized by dramatics, with movement, deep color, and evoking emotion from the viewer. This sculpture is breathtaking and it shows how complex one's emotions can be with a piece of art. The hovering figure seems to be levitating and immediately grabs the viewer's attention. There are many ornate details as well with the interwoven details of the figure's clothing. There is a cupid-like figure which appears to be an angel holding an arrow.  Renaissance Blog Post Piece of Art from the Italian Renaissance:   Mona Lisa   by Leonardo da Vinci        The Mona Lisa is one of the most renowned and well-known paintings around the world. To me, it is one of the most beautiful works of art. The first thing that I noticed after learning about the elements involved in the creation of art, was the emphasis that was placed on lines and texture. The depth that is created through the lines and texture in this piece adds to the transition between dark and light in the foreground. The color of the figure and the background allow the onlooker to clearly create a visual divide between the main focus the " Mona Lisa" and the background. Without the focus being directed by the artist, the viewer might be confused about where to focus their attention. Da Vinci did not create the texture by actually building up paint on the canvas.  Work of Art :  1) The work of art that I chose was Starry Night by Van Gogh again as I wanted to research more about my favorite painting. This painting has many aspects of the art elements we have studied during this week's lesson.      2)   The elements of art are crucial components that highlight the way different pieces of work are different. There are many elements that artists utilize to create differing aspects of their work. The elements that I see included are line, texture, and color/light. The line elements that he used for the sky created a rotating curve which showed the direction of the night sky and also created the structure of a skyline. The color adds dimension and the concept of color to the piece of art. The shapes created a two-dimensional look to the piece as well.  Introduction:  My name is Hannah Brooks and I am a transfer student here at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I am a senior and finishing my biology degree here. I have played basketball my whole life so this is the first time in my college career that I am no longer playing which has been an adjustment. I am very excited, however, to devote more time to my studies and start preparing for the healthcare field that I hope to be a part of one day. I am from Syracuse, New York and this is my first time coming to Alaska. I am super excited for this year and the coming semester.
