Romantic Era

The Romantic Era is highlighted with energy and passion showcased throughout the work. This is very recognizable in the following works that have been chosen.

First Artist: John Constable

John was a highly renowned Romantic Era painter. He was actually one of the first artists to create landscape drawings and paintings. He was also one of the first artists to be involved in romantic paintings and movement.

Artwork: "The Hay Wain"

The "Hay Wain" is one of the most famous Romantic Era paintings. John Constable has a beautiful depiction of the countryside. His use of color is beautiful as well as his incorporation of naturalism. His depiction of nature seems to be celebratory and one that shows off the beauty of nature through the painting. There is a celebration of the rural life that is depicted by this scenery. This is located at the National Gallery of Art in London. It was created in 1821 by John Constable. It is oil on canvas and I find it absolutely beautiful. This painting also uses color to convey the real aspects of nature that Constable has created. Without the sense of naturalism and realism, this painting would not be as powerful. There is also a sense of emotion that can be shown through the painting. There is an emphasis on the beauty in this canvas, it is notable especially because of the use of colors. Nature is one of the highlights of the Romantic era as well. It is an era that protrudes beauty. There was an emphasis placed on individualism which is seen here by the landscape portrait of the countryside that Constable was most notable for. There is depth created by the different colors on the canvas. There is a naturalist approach based on the color scheme and the depiction of the countryside. There is an emotion created by the realness and beautiful scenery that is so beautifully displayed. The Romantic era highlighted the beauty of nature which is clearly shown by the "Hay Wain". I prefer the darker and more conservative side of romanticism. This piece and "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" are what I am describing in this style. They are more natural feelings and are not as outlandish and graphic as the other two that I chose to evaluate. These two of the "Hay Wain" and "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" are both more of realistic depictions from the Romantic era. They highlight nature in a naturalistic way

    The Raft of the Medusa

Another major contributor to the romantic era was Theodore Gericault. Gericault was another artist who was very popular during the Romantic Era. He was a French Painter. The "Raft of the Medusa" is a very famous romantic era painting. This is a depiction of the end of a shipwreck, There is a huge emotional response created by this painting. There is a huge contrast between the light and dark to show the bodies of the survivors. This was first exhibited in 1819 in the Paris Salon. However, the French government did not approve of this. It was met with a high amount of criticism. Today, it can be found in the Louvre Museum in Paris. I personally do not like this work as much as the painting above. I think this one however is very intricate in its design. The depiction of the survivors is amazing and very well drawn. There is a dynamic approach met through the use of colors. There is a lot of contrast created through the use of color as well. This provides an aspect of depth. This is a beautifully done painting that was created in 1818. the survival of a shipwreck is depicted in a way that the viewer has quite an emotional response to this painting. The paintings of "The Nightmare" and the "Hay Wain" are dramatic and expressive paintings of the Romantic era. I prefer the first two paintings that were highlighted and were Romantic landscape paintings. The other two in comparison were a part of the Gothic Romantic paintings. They focus more on the dark and dreary side of art. They seek to get an emotional response from the viewer. These were much less pleasant to me. I preferred the Romantic landscape paintings that highlighted realism and nature. They were much lighter and seemed to be more of my style for art.

Henry Fuseli is the next artist who painted a beautiful romantic era picture. In his painting "The Nightmare", Fuseli creates and invokes a very complex response from the viewer.

"The Nightmare" has become the icon of the Romantic era. There is such a contrast of coloring in this picture that I find it quite breathtaking. I really like this painting and I think it has been my favorite work so far. There is a complex incorporation of both a dark and eerie feeling that is created with the color choice. This is heavily contrasted with the woman's light and bright body draped across the dark surface of the table. This is a gothic horror painting that became one of the most popular paintings during the Romantic era. There is a sense of supernatural activity going on in this painting. The Romantic Era is characterized by using one's imagination to thrive. The supernatural was a common subject in the Romantic era. Fuseli created an alternate reality for the viewer. This is something that I find fascinating because he transported us to another world while still combining reality and realism with the supernatural.

The celebration of nature was highly celebrated in the Romantic era. "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" Was created during the peak of the Romantic era. It was created by Caspar David Friedrich in 1818. The highly skilled painter created a celebration of nature in a very realistic yet still imaginative way. This allowed for the proper development of not only the painting he was trying to create, while still creating something interesting for the viewer to look at. This painting currently can be found at Hamburger Kunsthalle in Germany. I think the color of the sky contrasted with the main figure's clothing creates depth for the viewer which makes this appear real. This applies to the appreciation for nature as well as a sense of imagination combined with realism that allows the viewer to appreciate the beauty that is created in this painting. I think when evaluated, this painting creates a sense of warmth to my imagination. It reminds me to dream a little bit when looking at paintings.

The romantic era created a sense of another world or out-of-this-world experience for people. I think if we appreciate the beauty and imagination that was created in the romantic era, we all would see a little more beauty every day. This painting and "The Hay Wain" are the same Romantic landscape style and appreciate and highlight the nature around them. These two were my favorite.
